Carrier Oils

Vegetable Oils, which are the most familiar Carrier Oils used in aromatherapy, have many beneficial qualities not only in natural therapies, but also in the field of nutrition. Natural vegetable oils extracted from nuts and seeds are rich in fatty acids and other nutrients and have played an important role in many cultures as medicines, beauty treatments and food supplements.

The best Carrier Oils to use in aromatherapy are Vegetable Oils that are “Cold - Pressed” via the Expeller Pressing Process, whereby no external heat has been applied to the seed while it is being pressed.

Carrier Oils enhance the absorption of Absolutes and Essential Oils into the skin and are highly effective moisturizers and balancing and stabilizing agents, providing many of the nutrients the skin needs to keep it smooth and supple.

In the Expeller Pressing Process the seeds are initially cleaned, crushed and cooked at varying temperatures to destroy the cells that contain the oil. The crushed seeds are then pressed in an expeller press, which is a continually rotating spiral shaped augur which moves the seed forward and pushes the seed against a metal press head. The pressure generated in the head of an expeller press reaches several tons per square centimeter. The turning augur further crushes the seed and creates friction in the seed mass, which produces heat in the press head. Both the heat and the pressure force the oil out of the seed and the unrefined oil runs out through slots or holes in the side of the press head, while the oil cake, the solid remainder of the seed mash, is pushed out through slits in the end of the press head. The pressing process usually takes only a few minutes at temperatures around 85 C. The oil is then filtered and sold as “Cold - Pressed Oil”.
